Japan's Defense Ministry Establishes Dedicated UAP Investigation Unit

Japan establishes the Aerospace Anomaly Analysis Group under its Air Self-Defense Force to formally investigate UAP encounters.

Japan's Ministry of Defense has announced the creation of a specialized unit dedicated to investigating unidentified aerial phenomena, making it the latest nation to formally address the UAP question through military channels.

The new unit, designated the Aerospace Anomaly Analysis Group (AAAG), will operate under the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and will be tasked with collecting, analyzing, and cataloging UAP encounters reported by military and civilian aviation authorities.

A Regional Response

Japanese defense officials cited multiple encounters by JASDF pilots over the past three years, including several incidents near sensitive military installations. "We can no longer treat these reports as isolated curiosities," said Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya. "The safety of our airspace and the security of our nation require a systematic approach."

Structure and Capabilities

The AAAG will consist of approximately 50 personnel with advanced radar analysis capabilities, satellite imagery access, coordination with civilian air traffic control, and a secure reporting system. The unit will maintain cooperation agreements with AARO (USA), Australia's UAP Task Force, and the UK's UFO desk.

Historical Context

Japan has notable UAP history, including the 1986 Japan Air Lines Flight 1628 encounter over Alaska, where a JAL cargo pilot reported a massive object shadowing his aircraft, confirmed by FAA radar data. Recent encounters by JASDF F-15J pilots near Okinawa prompted the formation of this new unit.

The AAAG is expected to be fully operational by mid-2026, with its first public report scheduled for early 2027.
